2022 Is Gonna Be Epic

Let’s be real, the film industry seriously needs a win after these past couple of years, and it’s definitely coming in 2022. This year is going to be FULL of awesome throwbacks, good vibes and new standards. We can barely contain ourselves, so we wanted to share with you all the things we’re excited for! So, without making you wait any longer…

International Cinema

If you’re not vibing with international films you’re seriously missing out. Like. Seriously. There’s a big world out there, and your screens deserve to be blessed. Just to name a few that you should keep your eyes open for in 2022: The Red Sky directed by Christian Petzold (a film about “love in a time of oppressive systems” – it just better not have a sad ending or you’ll have to answer to us), Music directed by Angela Schanelec (a retelling of the story of Oedipus) and Our Apprenticeship directed by Ryūsuke Hamaguchi (which follows an actress fleeing Japan after a scandal and the ways her perspective and life changes).

Ryūsuke Hamaguchi

Speaking of Hamaguchi… Drive My Car is a favourite to win best international feature film at the Oscars this year. We’re 100% behind this. He has a knack for stories that reveal just how delicate life is. There’s something so comforting about his films that makes us want to go out and live to the fullest (while we cry over a bucket of ice cream). He’s a director we’ll be watching this year for sure. We’ve got your back, Hamaguchi!

Hocus Pocus 2

Give us a date and time and we’ll be there, okay? We just have a list of demands, nothing too crazy: Firstly, if the sequel doesn’t have any singing in it, you will be hearing from our lawyers. We didn’t get out of bed for a song-less Hocus Pocus. Secondly, if Binx isn’t making a comeback we need something more about his story because he was so cute for what? Just to leave? Typical. Thirdly, and most importantly, we want some backstory on the sisters. Come on, Disney. There’s gotta be some juicy gossip there.

Flashbacks

Hocus Pocus 2 won’t be the only sequel giving us a big delicious spoonful of nostalgia. Get your fluffy pink pens ready, Legally Blonde 3 is finally coming to screens, and the next Scream (complete with the queen Courtney Cox) will be taking us on another thrilling experience. Here’s hoping we survive this one, we want to be in the next sequel, too.

Representation Matters

Black Panther 2 is just one example of filmmakers making a huge difference to the industry. After the tragic passing of Chadwick Boseman Marvel has not pulled away from the Black Panther story. The film will focus on his sister, Shuri, played by Letitia Wright, and we’re absolutely HERE for seeing her kick ass. It’s going to be transformative and women have been waiting for a moment like this. Keep it up, people.

Gaming in Film

Uncharted has been on everyone’s radar lately. Excellent casting, 10/10, great job. We’re SO proud that Tom Holland is getting to play this role, he basically spoke it into existence. Gaming in film has a bit of a bad rep, but we have super high hopes that this is going to completely turn that around. Uncharted is going to set a new standard for adaptations and we’re ready for it. May we also suggest: Red Dead Redemption, Genshin Impact, and Horizon Zero Dawn.

Bob’s Burgers

Speaking of adaptations, Bob’s Burgers has us all on the edge of our seats. Non-Disney cartoons not for babies is pretty uncommon let’s not lie, and when they do happen you bet you’re gonna catch us in line. The film has a lot to live up to but we’re sure that it’s totally gonna hit the spot. It’s gonna be a musical, btw. So there’s that. Yeah.

We’ll be screening some of these must-sees this summer on our rooftops, so be sure to sign up for our newsletter to keep updated about our schedule!
