Impeccable screenings: Top Picks New York May & June
We’re mega excited to be back in New York, and we know you are too ‘cause you literally haven’t stopped asking about it (and we love it). So, to celebrate The Big Apple itself, here’s our top picks for May, containing only films set or shot in the lovely New York City.
Lady Bird
New York shot:
(West 3rd Street & 6th Avenue)
Why you should watch it:
Okay, so there’s only a few scenes actually shot in New York, but hear us out. A little birdy told us that Lady Bird is warming hearts everywhere. It’s emotional. It’s hilarious. It’s fiery. Once you watch it, you’ll never feel alone again (and not in a creepy way).
Also, Timothée Chalamet.
Best quote:
“I hate California, I want to go to the east coast. I want to go where culture is like, New York, or Connecticut or New Hampshire.”
Go find culture on June 23rd.
Ghostbusters
New York shot:
(Columbus Circle)
Why you should watch it:
Who you gonna call… to book tickets to see this with?! Not only is the big blobby ghost probably the cutest ghost evah (aside from Casper, obviously) it’s also got some super funny scenes and Tom Hanks.
Best quote:
“We came, we saw, we kicked its ass!”
Bust ghosts in New York on June 22nd.
Big
New York shot:
(FAO Schwarz, Fifth Avenue)
Why you should watch it:
Big is turning 30 this year but it doesn’t look a day over Adolescent-Teenager. It’s just a big kid in an adult’s body. This film reminds you that no matter what age you are, you can always have a trampoline inside your home. Like, who doesn’t want that?! People you shouldn’t be friends with, that’s who.
Best quote:
“See that girl over there in the red? Say ‘hi’ to her and she’s yours. She’ll have her legs around you so tight you’ll be begging for mercy.”
“Well, I’ll stay away from her, then.”
Grow up big and strong on June 16th.
Breakfast at Tiffany’s
New York shot:
(Tiffany’s & Co. 5th Avenue)
Why you should watch it:
We’ve had royalty walk our streets. The genuinely flawless Audrey Hepburn is here to let you know that you’re never too elegant to go to jail. Don’t do the crime if you can’t do the time. All she wants is to marry a rich guy. We can all relate.
Best quote:
“People don’t belong to people.”
Feel glamorous on June 3rd.
Taxi Driver
New York shot:
(8th Ave south of 47th Street)
Why you should watch it:
To finally get all the references people make to it, probably. Like, why do so many people keep asking if we’re talking to you?! You’ll probably never get in a taxi again after this. It goes from bad to worse, to kinda sweet, to pretty terrifying in the space of about 5 minutes, so brace yourself.
Best quote:
“I’m waiting for the sun to shine.”
Take a ride in a taxi on June 11th.
Coming To America
New York shot:
(8507 Queens Blvd)
Why you should watch it:
Coming To America is celebrating its 30th anniversary and we take every opportunity we can to party. It’s Eddie Murphy at his best and if you weren’t a fan before (firstly, why not?) you will be now.
Best quote:
“Do not alert him to my presence. I will deal with him myself.”
Reference Darth Vader on June 16th.
Do The Right Thing
New York shot:
(Lexington Avenue and Stuyvesant Avenue)
Why you should watch it:
Because it’s the right thing to do. Do The Right Thing will not only challenge you, but will also make you laugh… and maybe cry. Probably. It will remind you of why you love New York. The people.
Best quote:
“My people, my people, what can I say; say what I can. I saw it but didn’t believe it; I didn’t believe what I saw. Are we gonna live together? Together, are we gonna live?”
Be a good person on May 28th.
