September’s Smashing Selection: The Top 10 Films On Our Los Angeles Rooftops
It’s been one perfect Los Angeles summer, with some serious heat waves along the way…but that hasn’t stopped us from enjoying some amazing films on our rooftops. Views for days with booze, popcorn, and a bit more booze. But it ain’t over til the fat lady sings, so while we try and find one, we’ll be screening another month of films for altitude lovers. Hold on tight, spoilers ahead. In no particular order, here’s our top ten…
The Nice Guys
Pros
A super 70s throwback which will keep you grooving to classic tunes whilst trying to remember why the hell bell-bottoms are out of style?? Bring ‘em back! The Nice Guys combines two unlikely friends together in the ultimate action/comedy duo – making for a fast paced and hilarious sight. Also, Ryan Gosling.
Cons
When the movie ends. It’s so packed with classic lines and funny moments (Gosling screaming like a girl, the bathroom scene where he struggles with a newspaper, a gun, and a cigarette, it’s too good!), you legit get bummed when it’s over. Unless… sequel?!
Best Quote
Holland March: “Look on the bright side. Nobody got hurt.”
Jackson Healy: “People got hurt.”
Holland March: “I’m saying, I think they died quickly. So I don’t think they got hurt.”
Put that comb in your afro and snag your tickets at The Montalban on September 1st.
Pulp Fiction
Pros
This one’s got it all: A milkshake-loving Uma Thurman, a swearing Samuel L Jackson, a dancing John Travolta, and a bald Bruce Willis (wait…he’s always bald). More pros: you learn what the hell a ‘Royale with Cheese’ is, how to save someone from a cocaine addiction, oh yeah, and how to clean up a car post-brutal murder.
Cons
More Steve Buscemi, please.
Best Quote
“That’s when you know you’ve found somebody special. When you can just shut the f*ck up for a minute and comfortably enjoy the silence.”
Slam that milkshake and pick up tickets for our showing at Level DTLA on Sept 1st and The Montalban on Sept 27th.
10 Things I Hate About You
Pros
Well for one, you’ve got a young Joseph Gordon-Levitt AND a young Heath Ledger, so already this one knocks it out of the park. Not to mention the super 90s music and fashion (high cut tops for dayssss). And haven’t we all wanted to drink a little too much, jump on top of a table, and dance solo to Biggie’s ‘Big Poppa’? Plus Julia Stiles character is a feminist badass whom is even more relevant in today’s world.
Cons
There are none. This movie is perfect, okay?
Best Quote
Walter Stratford: “Hello, Katarina. Make anyone cry today?”
Kat Stratford: “Sadly, no. But it’s only 4:30.”
After making your 10 things you hate list, grab tickets to our showing at The Montalban on September 5th.
Mean Girls
Pros
It’s so fetch. It’s not a regular film, it’s a cool film. It’s full of wisdom (Don’t have sex because you will get pregnant and die), fashion advice (That is the ugliest effing skirt I’ve ever seen), and it’s just basically freakin’ grool. It’s also totally quotable. You go, Glen Coco.
Cons
Try getting through the holidays without thinking of the famous Plastics dance to ‘Jingle Bell Rock’.
Best Quote
Literally every word.
Get in, loser, we’re going to see it at The Montalban on September 6th.
Jurassic Park
Pros
Ah, the classic Spielberg film that fills our hearts with both fear and joy. This is definitely where you can get your healthy dose of dinosaur education whilst also feeling like you’re on a safari adventure. Is that not the setup for the best movie ever? We think it is. The biggest pro of them all: Jeff Goldblum. No explanation needed.
Cons
Remembering that Jurassic Park isn’t an actual place you can visit with real dinosaurs L It would be SO much fun (if you forget about the whole T-Rex eating people on the toilet), amirite?
Best Quote
John Hammond: “All major theme parks have delays. When they opened Disneyland in 1956, nothing worked!”
Dr. Ian Malcolm: “Yeah, but, John, if The Pirates of the Caribbean breaks down, the pirates don’t eat the tourists.”
Jump in your Jurassic Park 4-wheel and head over to the rooftops at Level DTLA on Sept 7th and OfficeOps on Sept 13th.
Inception
Pros
Inception is imaginative, unique, and one of those films that people can debate about for hours. You don’t have to be a film student to have strong opinions about whether or not the thing at the end stops spinning, whether the cliff-hanger is the worst thing of all time actual ever; it’s the film’s ability to evoke different opinions that makes it so fun. Not to mention how it almost feels like you’re in a dream watching it, because they stretch the limits of the imagination with bending cities and twisting hotel rooms.
Also a super major pro: Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
Cons
Try sleeping that night without thinking about the layers of dreams you might fall into, if not questioning whether or not you’re already in one. In other words – try piecing your mind back together, because it’s a “mind blown” kind of film. Also, does the thing at the end ever stop spinning? WE NEED ANSWERS.
Best Quote
“You musn’t be afraid to dream a little bigger, darling.”
Take a nap at Level DTLA on Sept 9th, The Montalban on Sept 12th, and OfficeOps on Sept 7th.
Dirty Dancing
Pros
Ferris Bueller’s sister and Whoopi Goldberg’s ghost get together and dance their asses off, what’s better than that? A true summer classic, Dirty Dancing is packed with iconic EVERYTHINGS, like quotes (nobody puts Baby in a corner), music (I’ve had the time of my liiiiife), and dance moves (that leap, though). One does not simply go a whole summer without watching Dirty Dancing.
Cons
You can’t do the leap as well as Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze can.
Best Quote
“Me? I’m scared of everything. I’m scared of what I saw, I’m scared of what I did, of who I am, and most of all I’m scared of walking out of this room and never feeling the rest of my whole life the way I feel when I’m with you.”
Put down that watermelon and pick up tickets to our showing at Level DTLA on Sept 15th and The Montalban on Sept 22nd.
La La Land
Pros
Firstly, that soundtrack. Let’s let that speak for itself. If the music doesn’t make YOU want to get up and dance under the city of stars or on an LA freeway, we don’t know what will. Plus, Ryan Gosling is enough of an excuse to make a film worth seeing, but a Ryan + Emma duo?! Yes please. Whether you live the LA life or not, you know that “La La Land” is not your traditional cinematic story with the romantic happy ending, but seriously a relatable one about working hard to fulfill your dreams.
Cons
Try getting that music out of your head.
Best Quote
Sebastian: “Alright, I remember you. And I’ll admit I was a little curt that night.”
Mia: “‘Curt?'”
Sebastian: “Okay, I was an asshole. I can admit that. But requesting “I Ran” from a serious musician, it’s just, it’s too far.”
I guess we’ll see you at the movies, because La La Land is playing at The Montalban on Sept 20th, Level DTLA on Sept 23rd, OfficeOps on Sept 6th and Sept 27th, AND Yotel on Sept 21st!
Die Hard
Pros
You’ve got an 80’s Bruce Willis and Alan Rickman in his first ever movie, so already you’re in for a winner. This action packed thriller features the ultimate BAMF, John McClane, the real hero. Not to mention it’s the OG, so definitely worth seeing where all of the sequels spark from.
Cons
The infinite debate on if Die Hard is a Christmas film or not. I guess we’ll never know. Plus the fact that we’ll never be as fearless and badass as John McClane.
Best Quote
“Yippie-kai-yay, mother f*cker!”
Head to the rooftop for safety, because Die Hard is playing at our rooftop at The Montalban on September 26th.
Get Out
Pros
This one flaunts comedy and horror in one thing. Especially currently relevant, the film takes on the typical stereotypes in a tasteful way. This film deserves all the rave and hype, keeping us laughing while secretly gripping our seats for dear life (no, YOU’RE scared…). A tough combo to pull off, but this one does it well. Definitely a film for everyone, not just thriller/horror fans.
Cons
Walking out of the movie feeling so good but so paranoid and mind-f*cked at the same time.
Best Quote
“If I could, I would have voted for Obama for a third term.”
Get ready to ‘sink’ into your chair while watching Get Out at Level DTLA on Sept 30th, OfficeOps on Sept 8th, and Yotel on Sept 19th,
