Space Films That Are Out of This World

With all of the craziness happening in the world right now, a lot of us could use some serious space. Outer space, that is. Space week hits at the fresh start of October, but let’s be real – every week should be space week. So we’re getting space-festive, and have chosen some of our favorite space films (out of the seemingly infinite list of space films out there).

APOLLO 13

The Best Parts:

Movie couples are great and all, but a film with a solid trio is truly worth cherishing (Hocus Pocus, anyone?). So, mad props to the casting director for putting Bill Paxton, Tom Hanks, and Kevin Bacon in a spaceship and sending them off.
Also (*spoiler if you don’t know about the real Apollo 13 mission*), the moment when they realize they ain’t steppin’ on no moon – hits right in the feels.

Favorite quote:

“We just lost the moon.”

INTERSTELLAR

The Best Parts:

The whole thing!?! Gotta love a space adventure with a heart-wrenching father-daughter story to underline it (don’t worry, we’ll get to Armageddon later). This film has the ‘mind blown’ elements from Inception and the ‘unexpected twist ending’ from Fight Club, which just makes it the most amazing space film.

Favorite Quote:

“We used to look up at the sky and wonder at our place in the stars, now we just look down and worry about our place in the dirt.”

2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY

The Best Parts:

Well for one, a masterpiece from a mastermind – Stanley Kubrick. Not to mention the wild conspiracy theories that stemmed from this film and all of the debates that Kubrick filmed the lunar landing of ’69 in a warehouse. Also worth mentioning: Hal 900’s rendition of ‘Daisy’, and the room with the under-lit flooring #goals.

Favorite Quote:

“I’m afraid. I’m afraid, Dave. Dave, my mind is going. I can feel it. I can feel it. My mind is going. There is no question about it. I can feel it. I can feel it. I can feel it.”

ALIEN

The Best Parts:

You know what we’re going to say. The chest-buster scene. The scene that would serve as a reference for the rest of time (ie: okay so on a scale of 0 to ‘Alien’, how bad is your chest pain right now?). As if we’d list anything else here.

Favorite Quote:

“Bring back life form. Priority One. All other priorities rescinded.”

STAR WARS

The Best Parts:

Is it too sappy to say ‘the community that came out of Star Wars’ as the best part? Okay okay, the best parts: lightsabers, BB-8, the Mos Eisley Cantina, and some goddamn iconic music scores. Not the best parts: Jar Jar Binks #sorrynotsorry.

Favorite Quote:

“Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi. You’re my only hope.”

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND

The Best Parts:

Okay so maybe this doesn’t take place in space, but we needed to add in some sort of Alien-centric Spielberg film, and we all know enough about E.T. So here we are. Best parts definitely include the super 70s visual effects, and the moment when they’re using tones to communicate with the aliens (inspiration for ‘Arrival’, much?).

Favorite Quote:

“You can’t fool us by agreeing with us.”

WALL-E

The Best Parts:

The cutest space film to ever exist obviously?! It’ll make you laugh, and cry, and appreciate space, and hope for a love like Wall-e and Eve. Eve and Wall-e are #couplegoals.

Favorite Quote:

“I don’t want to survive. I want to live.”

WALLE

ARMAGEDDON

The Best Parts:

For one – Bruce Willis classic. Two – serious space heroes, these guys. Also, as we mentioned earlier, that father-daughter love is so real and so heart-wrenching.

Favorite Quote:

“I love you so much daddy. And I’m so proud of you, I’m so scared. I’m so scared.” “I know it baby. But there won’t be anything to be scared of soon.”
